We started out introducing the story and characters.
Then we played the pirate king song by the Australian Opera company. The kids were intrigued by the thought of pirates that weren't that good at being pirates.
Then we introduced the girls and played 'Poor Wondering One' from the 1983 movie (clip from youtube.) I told the kids that it was the love song that didn't end. I played the beginning to introduce the melody and then fast forwarded to the first time he tries to kiss her. The kids thought that was funny.

In interest of time I had to do a lot of fast forwarding and I think I only played it for two groups but I had to include Tom Lehrer's The elements. I found two good versions. The first was Tom Lehrer himself and the other had a series of pictures which was the kid's favorite. (I did have to edit it in movie maker to cover the swear word.
I skipped the paradox song but had the police song. Again for time's sake I didn't get to use it much but the groups that heard it loved it. This version is from a play that obviously was the precursor of the 1983 movie. In some ways I liked it quite a bit better than the movie if only it wasn't such a bad recording.
The last song we used was cat-like tread. I asked the kids how they would sneak up on something and then show them how the pirates did it. I liked this version because of the contrast of loud and quiet. I did stop before the encores they got a little long and iffy for kids.
For the groups that I had enough time, I played a selection of Penzance numbers done by The Muppets and Gilda Radner. (I had a choice with 5th grade between this and the police song. I think the 5th would have actually liked the police better. But they all adored this.)
